Return to Player (RTP) Percentage: A Definition and How It Works

If you are new to the online casino scene and want to hit the slot machines, you will come across a number of terms. One of them is RTP, which stands for Return to Player. When newcomers hear such terms, they tend to get discouraged, and while it is an important term, it is not complicated to understand what it means and how it works.

RTP Defined

Every slot machine or casino game has a payout percentage, and RTP tells you what that number is. When players want to find out how much of their total wages will be returned to them over a period of time, they look at this number, which is expressed as a percentage.

How is the RTP calculated? That is where the house edge comes into play. For example, if the player is playing keno with a house edge of 25%. It means that the RTP for keno will be 75% (RTP = 100% – house edge). You can do the same for any other game. For example, blackjack has a house edge of 0.5%, meaning the player should expect to get 99.5% of his bet when playing blackjack for a long time.

It is worth mentioning that for casino games with no strategy, like slot machines, the basic formula for calculating RTP can be used. But for games that have strategies, such as blackjack, the player’s ability to play the game can affect the house edge, which means it also affects the RTP.

How it Works

Basically, RTP works like this: if the percentage is high, the machine will pay out more over a period of time. For instance, if a particular game or slot has an RTP of 95%, the player should be expected to get £0.92 for every £1 over time.

Also, if one slot has a high RTP, it doesn’t mean that all slots have the same percentage; each slot has its own RTP. The same thing is true for different casinos, meaning the same slot machine can have a different RTP at a different casino.

What is important to remember about RTP, however, is that it is a statistic rather than a guarantee. This means the player is bound to get somewhere between zero and the RTP. In other words, the RTP should be treated as a theoretical value.

RTP and Random Number Generators

When speaking of statistics, keep in mind that slot machines use a Random Number Generator (RNG) with every spin. This means it is useless to try to determine the outcome of future spins based on past ones since everything is random. Ultimately, the RTP of a slot machine can’t be used to determine the frequency of payouts on a slot machine.

Now that you know the definition of RTP and how it works, you should have a good idea about why the term matters. When picking a slot machine, various things need to be considered. And RTP is one of those things that simply cannot be ignored if you want value for each bet.
